No. 32, 24th April: Fern curl

Taking photos of the dandelion the other day reminded me how much I love macro photography. Winter is always quite a fallow period for macro subjects, but now spring is here there are flowers and bees and ferns popping up all over the place! Yesterday I spotted a fern beginning to unfurl and went to see if I could find some more in my favourite fern-field. I didn't have to look far. At this time of year the ferns are contorted into all kinds of interesting shapes. I've noticed that the shapes they make as they unfurl seem to differ from one clump to another. Some uncurl from both ends to create a kind of folded frond, while others stay tightly curled to the very tip. I don't know whether this is to do with environmental factors, or the type of fern it is (if anyone knows I'd be interested to find out). Ferns have got to be my favourite subject to photograph. I always hesitate before stating that something is my favourite because I feel like I think it about lots of the things I photograph, and therefore can't possibly mean it all the time - but I think it's safe to say that ferns really are my favourite! Just look at those fronds! The way they curl and twist and repeat. So delicate, determined and strong all at the same time.
