GRASPING THE NETTLE

(Dir. Mairi Eyres)

  • Winner of Best Student Film at the International Wildlife Film Festival 2024

  • Nominated for Royal Television Society Student Awards 2024

  • Selected for the London Mountain Film Festival 2024

Nettles are a plant many of us are familiar with. They sting our bare legs, invade our gardens and swamp our footpaths. Yet there is something about this unloved plant that captures my imagination. Could there be more to their story? I set off on a journey to find out, building an unusual piece of camera equipment, and meeting the people who can show me a different side to the nettle. With beautiful imagery and touching characters, this film is a call to examine the way we view nature, and to appreciate the wonders right on our doorstep.

"A winner for its choice of characters, and technical innovation!" - International Wildlife Film Festival

In the remote landscapes of China, ecologist Amaël Borzée has dedicated five years of his life to understanding and preserving the legacy of the Chinese immaculate tree frogs. This year, Amaël’s path crosses with Ningjing Wang, a local filmmaker whose love for frogs traces back to her childhood. United by a shared hope to save the frogs, they embark on an extraordinary journey into the heart of rural China. Can their joint efforts secure a future for this overlooked amphibian?
