FILMMAKER AND PHOTOGRAPHER
ABOUT
Hello!
I'm Mairi, an award-winning self-shooting film director, photographer and a science communicator based in Bristol. I have a first-class MSci in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) from Cambridge University, and a Distinction for my MA in Wildlife Filmmaking from the University of the West of England. I’m drawn to forms, colours, light, and enjoy looking for unusual ways to capture the world around me. Through my filmmaking, I aim to tell stories that highlight the intricate links between humans and nature, engaging audiences with the issues threatening our planet.
FILM
My film ‘Grasping the Nettle’ won Best Student Film at the 2024 International Wildlife Film Festival, and I have directed and shot several other short films – including ‘Dyeing for a Pocket’, ‘A Seagrass Summer’, and an animation with over six million views on YouTube. My work has been selected for other international film festivals (Norwich Queer International Film Festival, London Mountain Film Festival). I have worked on international shoots, including as a camera operator for ‘Immaculate’, a documentary about nocturnal frogs in China. I have directed, shot and edited two short films about regenerative farming for Pasture for Life, and have been commissioned to make a third film about biodiversity of chalk grasslands. I am currently working as a freelance documentary film director, camera operator and camera assistant, as well as tutoring A Level chemistry part-time.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Growing up in rural Mid Wales, I spent many happy hours wandering the hills looking for wildlife. Initially I saw photography as a way of recording the species I saw, but I soon found that this was no longer enough. Over the years, photography has become an important part of how I express myself and interact with my surroundings; it has opened my eyes to details like the curl of a fern frond, the silhouette of an ant, or the shapes made by light hitting water. My photos have been awarded in several nature photography competitions, including winning Young Landscape Photographer of the Year in 2015. This website contains some of my favourite photos grouped together in collections. Each collection might be linked by a colour, a theme or simply because I find the order pleasing.
HAVE AN IDEA FOR A PROJECT? GET IN TOUCH!
I hope you enjoy looking through the photos and films on this site. If you have any feedback, enquiries, or ideas for collaborations, I'd love to hear from you. I am currently accepting filmmaking commissions.
Environmental statement
Minimising my environmental impact is hugely important to me. I try to avoid flying where I can, instead focusing on the beauty I find close to home. Most of the photos on this site have been taken in the UK.
I also aim to run the business-side of my photography as sustainably as I can. The greetings cards sold on this site are packaged in recyclable paper bags instead of cellophane to avoid unnecessary plastic waste. They are then inserted into stiff recycled card envelopes for shipping. Each year I donate 10% of the money from my calendars to a nature conservation charity. I also encourage people to deconstruct and recycle their calendars after use. I'm always looking for ways to improve this aspect of my photography business so if you have any thoughts, let me know.
