No. 49, 17th September: Golden deer

This is my favourite photo from a recent camping trip I took to the Suffolk coast. I was incredibly lucky with the weather - and with my deer-spotting! One evening I set out to look for deer and had only walked two minutes from my tent before I came across this herd!

I love the abstract shapes of the backlit grasses, and the way the deer's head fits neatly among them. To get this angle, I had to hop over a fence and crouch down in the grass on the other side. The sun was shining low in the sky directly behind the deer, lighting up the outer edges of its fur.

Astonishingly, this particular deer seemed oblivious to my presence - in fact it may not have looked up at all if it hadn't been for the couple shouting at their dog on the footpath behind me!
