I crept from tree to tree, trying to make as little noise as possible - but the woodland floor was covered with sticks and dry leaf litter, so it was inevitable that this deer heard me. It raised its head, swivelled its ears and gave me a penetrating stare. I must have been particularly well hidden because soon after this photo was taken it resumed its feeding, and I managed to edge a few trees closer before it finally spotted me. In this photo, I like the way the bent reeds echo the line of the deer's nose.
Taken at Minsmere Nature Reserve in Suffolk last year.
